Another Boy Printer Visits This wonderful photo was brought to the International Printing Museum by visitors Chuck and Carol Everts. It shows Chuck at 8 -10 years of age, watching his father, Emil Everts, printing cards on a Chandler & Price letterpress at the Newport-Balboa Press in Balboa, California. The senior Everts, Emil, was the prop of United Printing Company at 7th and Stanford Streets in the middle of downtown Los Angeles for many years. Chuck caught the printing bug at an early age and had a Superior Rubber Set press, a small mimeograph and even a hectograph. We enjoyed swapping memories about similar childhood experiences and interests. Traveling to the Museum with Chuck and Carol were Bill and Beverly Peters. All enjoyed an interactive visit to the Main Gallery with Peter Small and then a tour of the Book Arts Institute. They particularly enjoyed seeing Luis Garcia set their names on the Linotype while Dr. Leland printed proofs for them on the Vandercook. The group had the opportunity to visit with Docent Marjory Wilser discussing various aspects of printing and later with Curator/Director, Mark Barbour. The last photo shows Chuck posing with a similar clam shell press, much like the Chandler & Price in his photo. Hopefully we have stirred up the embers of letterpress in all and look forward the group returning as docents some day soon. |
