Automobile Driving Museum Director Laurie Lewis, Executive Director of the Automobile Driving Museum, El Segundo, California, visited the International Printing Museum with her family. Coincidentally it was the birthday weekend for her husband Dennis whose father was a lifetime Linotype Operator. Dennis described watching his Dad work at the machine as he was growing up. Dennis would do many odd tasks, especially sweeping up the shop. The Lewis’s enjoyed a Front Gallery tour with Peter Small, and then Docent Director Dr. Leland Whitson showed them the Book Arts Institute. They felt right a home watching our Linotype Operator, Luis Garcia, setting their names on a “slug.” Dr. Leland then printed a keepsake for each on the Vandercook proof press. When the photo at right was framed and delivered to Laurie at her museum on Sunday, she said, “Seeing the Linotype was so moving for me and Dennis, we both had tears in our eyes. We all had such a great time; rest assured we will be sending any visiting groups here right over to you. Oh, by the way, we need more brochures.” The Automobile Driving Museum is located at 610 Lairport Street, one block off Sepulveda in El Segundo. They are open Saturdays and Sundays, 10 AM – 4 PM. On Sundays they take visitors for rides in their cars. Admission: a $5 donation is suggested. Take a look at their extensive website: www.automobiledrivingmuseum.org |
