Thunderbird Club Visits the Carson, California, July 12, 2007 Twenty-two members of the Early Birds Thunderbird Club of Southern California from Orange, California, visited our Museum. They were treated to a special Ben Franklin Show with Phil Soinski, an extended tour of the Main Gallery by Peter Small and then a catered lunch. After lunch, they enjoyed having their names set on the Linotype by Luis Garcia and printed by Dr. Leland Whitson. Assistant Director Rachelle Woo Chuang also showed visitors about the Book Arts Institute. Martha Lazdins, who planned this outing, told of how she had visited the museum in Buena Park some 15 years ago. She said, “I knew you had moved but didn’t know where until I saw the Huell Howser show when he visited here.” Martha knew members of the club would find the Printing Museum interesting and scheduled their visit. When I pulled in the parking lot a little before 10:00 am on Saturday, sitting near the front gate was this beautiful coral sand colored ’57 Ford Thunderbird. Martha and husband Harold were seated in folding chairs next to the car awaiting others to arrive. The parking lot soon filled with many beautifully maintained Thunderbirds of various vintages along with other members’ unique cars. By the end of their visit, it was clear that the group had enjoyed themselves and left with a number of keepsakes. Overheard were comments such as, “Boy that Franklin guy was so good. We’d be a lot better off if our kids could get that kind of education.” “Peter was so good and explained everything so completely.” “I told my wife she probably would be bored with this kind of stuff. Sort of preparing her for it. But boy that wasn’t the case. She really enjoyed it.” “I am amazed at all you have and that it all works.” “I can’t wait to tell my friends about this place. It is a real sleeper.” From our end, yours was a delightful group that we enjoyed having visit. Thanks for being so attentive and thanks for bringing your cars. Do come again. |
