ABOUT THE BOOK ARTS INSTITUTE

Thanks to the generosity of the Windgate Foundation, the Ludwick Family Foundation, and the Miki Young Charitable Trust, the International Printing Museum opened its Book Arts Institute, a 4600-square-foot teaching lab, in 2020! While the Museum has long offered small classes and workshops, our Book Arts Institute is a dedicated space for full-size workshops focusing on printing techniques as well as the book and paper arts. Using our collections of antique printing machinery, vintage type, and book arts equipment, our aim is to fully develop the Book Arts Institute as the premier public teaching space for book arts in Southern California.

Book Arts Institute Policies

Location: Workshops are held in our rear building, which is adjacent to Kelly Spicer Paper (behind the Museum) at 315 W. Torrance Blvd in Carson, CA. We recommend parking near that building.

Registration: Participants may register online (preferred), by phone, or in person. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Workshops are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Some workshops do require a minimum number of participants. Registration fees must be paid in full to secure the space. Unless otherwise indicated, the registration fee covers one adult participant. Participants must be age 18+, unless special arrangements with the Museum in advance. Note: Sorry, we do NOT allow observers or auditors.

Waitlists: We maintain waitlists for any workshops that are sold out. When we receive notice of a cancellation, we will reach out to those on the waitlist either by email or text. If you’re on the waitlist, please do not show up for a workshop unless you’ve been contacted in advance to confirm that there is a space for you.

Cancellation (by student): A participant can receive a refund for the workshop fee if they cancel at least fourteen (14+) business days prior to the workshop. A participant can receive a credit for the workshop fee if they cancel at least seven (7+) business days prior to the workshop. A participant will forfeit their workshop fee if they cancel less than seven (< 7) business days prior to the workshop, unless the spot is subsequently filled. If the spot if filled by another participant, the person who cancelled will receive a credit for the workshop. All workshop credits must be used within six months of the issue date; please contact the Museum to use the credit towards enrollment in another workshop. To advise the Museum of a cancellation, please call (310) 515-7166 (leave a message) or email ipm@printmuseum.org. Be sure to include your name, contact information, and workshop date.

Cancellation (by museum or instructor): Workshops may be cancelled three (3) business days in advance if the minimum number of participants has not been met. On rare occasion, an instructor may be forced to cancel a workshop because of illness, accident, or other unavoidable circumstance. When this happens, participants will be notified with as much notice as possible; the fees they paid can either be refunded or applied towards another workshop.

Content: The use of recording devices, still cameras, or video cameras by participants is NOT permitted during any workshop without explicit consent of the instructor in advance.

Scholarships: If you are experiencing financial hardships and are unable to afford an upcoming workshop, please email mark@printmuseum.org to request information about need-based scholarships.

Accommodations: Please contact the Museum by phone or email in advance for any specific accommodations that you may need to participate in an upcoming workshop.

Assumption of Risk: The use of printing and bookbinding equipment is potentially dangerous. No participant should use any equipment or tools without proper training. All participants should wear comfortable, close-toed shoes; no flip-flops please. Anyone who is pregnant should be aware that printing shop solvents may be potentially dangerous during pregnancy and should consult with a doctor before enrolling in a workshop. 

Release of Liability: Workshop participants assume all risk and danger incidental to participating in the workshop, whether occurring prior to, during, or after said activity. Workshop participants further agree that the International Printing Museum and its agents are not responsible or liable for any injuries resulting from such causes. In the event of an accident, the participant agrees to hold harmless the organization, its administration, the Board of Directors, staff and teachers.
