In his definitive book “American Wood Type: 1838–1900” Rob Roy Kelly noted that most wood typestyles fall into three categories: Antique, Roman and Gothic. Antique type has heavy slab serifs of substantial thickness. French Clarendon is a derivative or sub-category ofAntique and is based on European type of the time. It was introduced in the U.S. by W.Page in 1865. In the 1870s and 1880s French Clarendon No. 2 became a popular typeface for many kinds of posters ranging from circus posters for P.T. Barnum to the wanted posters of the old west.
